Breakin' the snail

This is my entry for Strange Behavior challenge. I thought it was not possible to put the image right away on the 2D showcase but I'm glad to share it now !

I still don't know how to publish details on the same post so, for who's interested, here are some details below (by the way, if somebody know how to do, advices welcome !)

Background story :
In the far far West of the garden, along the Death valley (the strange area where doesn't grow any carrotts or cabbages) it is really hard to live. The proof of it is visible everywhere : some snail's shells, empty and dried, are lost along the roads. Sometimes even, the poor elf, lost in the desert, without his bow, can be killed by the evil house cat, big as a mountain.
In the "green areas"-in the far West not that far- life is not easier at all! Sometimes, some strange machines, surely comen from the sky or the future, cut all the strands of grass like a tornado. Removed by an unbelievable power, every years at the same time, a kind of big mountain crossed the field, the carrotts are propulsed toward the sky, leaving some bomb's gaps into the ground...

The most famous of the west elfic gent, is called Jess ; It is said she is so brave that she doesn't know what "fear" means. She is especialy expert in breacking the snails, bubbling for anger.
Does that is a strange behavior ? Not at all in fact : It looks only a strange behavior to silly big guys like us, because we all believe that the snail is a very a weak and slow animal. Nothing is more wrong! Little fellows like elfs and faeries do certainly know that snails are really strong and wild. A cattle of them can make a desaster in a farm. Breacking them isn't a low task but a real art, according to a few people. And Jess is the best at this ! Her reputation went already to the neighbouring garden !
If you look carrefully at your feet, now, maybe you will be lucky enough to see that kind of scene, like I did, before fixing it for you in that painting...

Keeping on my way of mythological reinterpretation, I did this picture for a book coming out next year. The main character, Onir, is human at the beginning of the story – or at least, he believed so. In the flow of the story, he understand that his life in the “real world” is only a training to reintegrate as a king his true Empire – the Empire of Dreams- from which he was unseat a long time ago. Becoming more and more conscious of his true nature, he found up he was first a fauna in his empire…

The Last Fauna

Mythology is an unlimited source of inspiration. When I paint male models, I like to choose them a bit fragile and delicate featured. I don’t really like the violent side of them nor the body building archetypes. For a fauna is usually represented with a beard and strong features, I decided to paint a model of my own, imagining the last fauna on the planet : not as tall and as strong than his fathers from the past times, but with a kind of elvish glow on him. As all that we cherish on this planet, he is doomed to go away and to reach the mythology pantheon of our dead imaginary.

What I didn't expected anyway, is that this picture is going to be taken for Exotique 3!
It's my first time in a Ballistic book so I feel really overjoyed...

I really want to improve, so every critics are welcome...

Liadan

I am very sorry for those who have already seen this picture in my portfolio for a while and the one who chose it in their favorite and might have received a note for that ; I didn't find out how to put it in the showcase without having to delete it first and download it again... Next time, I promise, it will be a real new picture!
For the story :
That picture was made for book cover for a Spanish Publisher. Liadan is simply the forname of the main character, the girl with black hair on the picture. At this moment of the story, she is about to help her sister to escape from a very unpleasant situation.
I really hesitated between keeping on to get a more realistic look for the girls or to choose a more "painterly look".
Every critics welcome!

This is of course the winter allegory. Winter used to be very cold in East of France, several years ago, and as a child, I was fascinated by crystals of snow and glittering ice on vegetation. I tried in that picture to simulate the sparkled hexagons of light that appears in a lens when you catch macro photographic subjects.

Gone with the leaves

People usually say that I’m used to paint only women. That’s not completely true, even if I very seldom paint men.
My male characters have somehow delicates features and a kind of fragility. Almost ambiguous. Most of the time, a lot of things a painter choose to represent can be completely unconscious. As it is the case with me, it took me time before I understand the reason.
A lot of my pictures deal with nostalgia. I’m all “nostalgia”. The female character is more appropriate to translate that kind of feeling. A felling of desperate end of everything we cherish. So when I represent a man, he must pass on all that to us. It’s probably the reason I why I do prefer fragile characters like imps that the usual representation of the heroic-fantasy’s warrior.
